Well, currently I am taking a course called "Humanities in the Western Tradition." Which basically covers the written works and ideals from the dawn of writting to 1500. As religion has been a key factor in the way we, as humans, have lived our lives throughout history it is a central point in this class.
As a Catholic, and someone who tries his best to remain faithful to God through the endless arguements of oposing religions and atheists, I find it interesting to look at historic religions. One of the things I find curious is that all religions have striking resemblances, which for me is disturbing. For instance, nearly all religions have someone who has come to them being part divine, Gilgamesh and Heracles/Hercules being two that we have studied some. A great flood is also common, so my question is: Do they all stem from a central truth?
A simple answer is, yes. Yes, because there really was a great flood and some other pieces of the religions did occur, they were just credited to different people. If anything I feel that history has taught us that no God intervenes to tell the people of the world his or her word. It is the ruler of the opposing country that forces it upon the people, making it become the world renowned religion. Egypt had theres, then the Greeks forced theres upon people, then the Romans their interpretation, and Christianity by the Romans, the Spanish, the English, and so on. Fact is, not many are willing to radically change their religion (radical change being Pagan to Non-pagan or vice versa), because they are afraid of eternal damnation. They are afraid of trying to logically choose the best religion, because religion isn't based on logic it is based on faith. And when we stray from that faith, we feel we stray from the true path. We are worried about making the right decision. It is not we who choose our religion, it is our parents, and their parents before them, and possibly the ruler of the lands before them.
Imagine if Hitler had won, destroyed all records of the Jews, poisoned our minds about other races, and brown haired, brown eyed people. By now, if rebellion didn't succeed (I feel like at some point the people who remembered how it was would rebel), we may all believe in his beliefs, his sort of religion.
I suppose the basis for this blog is to say that, we can't know what is right, what is wrong when it comes to religion. So choose what you feel calls you. Religion hangs in the balance of all our hearts, it is in our world and our lives, there is no escaping it, it will always be.
